UK Global Talent Tech Nation: Can corporate product managers qualify?
Global Talent needs an endorsement, not an employer. The bar is exceptional talent or exceptional promise in your field. Most professionals move to the UK on the Skilled Worker visa instead. If you still want to apply for Global Talent, EP Advisory’s founder, Elizaveta Morjan, now runs a separate Global Talent coaching service.

A common question from product managers: “I’m a product manager at a major corporation, can I qualify for the UK Global Talent Tech Nation visa?”

If you’re reading this, you might be in the same position. Maybe you’ve worked at a major telecom company, bank, or multinational for most of your career. You’ve led key product launches, worked cross-functionally, and even introduced innovations, but the Tech Nation’s guidelines seem to favour startups and founders. The UK Global Talent Visa, especially under the Tech Nation route, is highly competitive. In this article, we explain how product managers from corporate backgrounds can qualify for the Global Talent Visa and what strategies you can use to strengthen your application.

Let’s unpack whether your corporate experience counts and what you can do if it doesn’t.

📌 Make sure you are following the latest version of the guidelines: Tech Nation Global Talent Visa guide (Notion), last updated 27 February 2026

Since August 2025 you apply for endorsement on the GOV.UK form. Tech Nation still assesses digital technology applications.

What Tech Nation means by a ‘product-led’ business

One of the most misunderstood terms in the Tech Nation guide is “product-led digital business.” The guide defines it as a business whose main source of revenue is its own digital product, service, platform or hardware. For business roles such as product management, it decides whether your experience counts.

Here’s what counts:

  • A company where a digital product is the core of the business (e.g. SaaS platforms, marketplaces, apps).
  • Typically startups or scaleups, although not exclusively.
  • Innovation and ownership are expected, not just execution.

What often doesn’t count:

  • Consultancies, outsourcers, agencies and marketing firms.
  • Businesses whose main revenue is not a digital product, such as most traditional banks and telecoms.
  • Corporate roles, or managing large corporate teams. The guide lists these as generally not suitable.

Example: A senior product manager at a large telecom company may have excellent credentials. But a telecom’s main revenue is usually not its own digital product. So under the guide, the experience may not count as product-led.

Can corporate experience ever qualify for the UK Global Talent Tech Nation visa?

Yes, but only in limited circumstances. Here are the most common workarounds:

1. You’re a niche technical expert

If you’re an AI researcher, machine learning engineer, or a developer with specialist skills, you might be endorsed even if your employer isn’t a product-led business. The guide says technical applicants, such as programmers, from non-technical organisations are eligible.

The rule for product managers: business applicants from technical organisations are eligible. Business applicants from non-technical organisations are generally not eligible. So the type of company you work for matters as much as your role.

2. You’ve recently switched to a startup/scaleup/unicorn/tech giant

If you move to a true product-led company and build a record of impact there, you could qualify based on this newer experience, even if your previous roles were in big corporates. The guide sets no minimum time in the new role. But each referee must have known your work for at least 12 months, and evidence made just to fit the timing of your application is not accepted.

Why OC1 usually doesn’t work for employees

The Optional Criteria 1 (OC1) focuses on innovation and IP.

For employees, the guide asks for clear proof that you work in a new digital field or concept. Its example is a granted patent with an ID you can check on Google Patents. Patent applications are not enough.

If you’re not a founder or inventor, OC1 is likely not realistic. The guide says OC1 is about innovation and OC3 is about impact, so using the same evidence for both may not be enough.

How product managers can build a strong UK Global Talent Tech Nation visa application?

Experienced Product Manager is on Tech Nation’s list of typical business skills. It counts when the work is in-house at a product-led digital technology company.

Here’s what you’ll need to show:

  • Ownership of high-impact product features.
  • Evidence: Jira tickets, internal docs, user metrics, dashboards.
  • Third-party validation: Press coverage about you in major or trade media (not self-published posts), and user growth data.
  • Letters of recommendation: 3 letters from established digital technology experts who have known your work for at least 12 months. Letters from an immediate colleague, manager or friend are not sufficient.

Where to place this evidence:

  • Mandatory Criteria (MC): everyone must meet it. It needs recognition as a leading talent from the last 5 years, such as press about you, awards or major talks.
  • OC3 (significant contribution) for your strongest, most measurable achievements.
  • You also need a second optional criterion, with at least 2 documents for each. For employees this is often OC2: work beyond your job, such as mentoring or open source. Avoid OC1 unless you truly qualify.

Should you publish articles or speak at conferences?

Absolutely, but be strategic.

Tips:

  • Write about ideas that advance the field, not your personal story. For OC2 the guide looks for activity that contributes to the advancement of the digital technology sector.
  • Conference talks should focus on product insights or technical leadership, not general career advice. For OC2, the guide asks for sector-leading events with at least 100 attendees, speaking on the main stage. Leading a workshop is not enough.
  • Do not pay for coverage or stage time. A talk does not count if your organisation paid for the invitation as part of a sponsorship. OC2 work must be voluntary and not done while representing your company.

Conclusion: Should you apply for the Global Talent visa now or later?

If you are a tech professional working for a non-product-led business and have a niche technical expertise, the guide says you are eligible. If your current role is purely corporate and lacks the product-led environment Tech Nation values, the guide says you are generally not eligible for now.

But don’t give up. Here’s what to do instead:

  1. Transition to a product-led startup or scaleup.
  2. Build a record of strong evidence over time. Each referee must have known your work for at least 12 months.
  3. Revisit the visa when you can clearly demonstrate impact, innovation, and leadership in a digital product context.

With planning and positioning, your Global Talent Visa is still within reach, just not today. And that’s okay.
