J.P. Morgan Investment Banking Analyst Application (2027): Stages, HireVue and Deadlines

Investment Banking Analyst · London · 2027 programme

Closes 1 Nov 2026

Short answer: You apply online with a CV and J.P. Morgan’s application questions, and no cover letter. If you advance, you get a required HireVue video interview by email. Round 2 is live interviews, virtual and/or in person. Both London routes, full-time and the summer internship, close on 1 November 2026. Review is rolling and places can fill sooner, so apply early.

Where are you now?

Independent guide. EP Advisory is not affiliated with J.P. Morgan.

J.P. Morgan’s 2027 Global Investment Banking Analyst Program has two London routes: a full-time analyst job and a summer internship. Both use the same process: an application, a HireVue video interview, then live interviews.

This playbook covers London, including for international students. For nearly 10 years, we’ve helped more than 5,000 professionals get hired. Want to know if your CV will pass screening in the UK? Check your CV for free: a score in 30 seconds, then a fix for each problem.

05/10Stage 2 · HireVue

The J.P. Morgan HireVue

J.P. Morgan’s only test for this role is a HireVue video interview. It is required. You record answers on screen, with no one live on the call.

5 to 8

Questions in most HireVue videos

Prep time at most banks, reported

The question count is from HireVue’s FAQ. The bank timings are what eFinancialCareers reports. J.P. Morgan publishes none of its settings. Your invite shows them.

Step through the HireVue

HireVue video interview: required

Welcome and device check

Read how many questions there are, how long it takes and the due date, then let the page check your camera and microphone. Employers set their own version, so yours may differ.

Our drawing of the HireVue start screens: a "What you can expect" card with the number of video questions, notes on how you will be reviewed, the time it takes, the due date and a Continue button, and a camera and microphone check with "Good!" ticks for video and audio.

Practise first

Answer a practice question in Practice Mode, then watch it back to check you can be seen and heard before you start the real interview.

Our drawing of a HireVue practice question with a blue Practice Mode banner saying responses are not saved, the question on the left and your video on the right, and a review card where you watch your answer and choose another practice question or Start Now.

Read the question while prep time runs

Read the question while the prep timer runs down, and click Start Recording when you are ready or wait for the timer to end.

Our drawing of a HireVue question screen during prep time: Question 2 of 6 with the retries and minutes allowed, the question text on the left, an orange prep time bar joined to a Start Recording button, and a darkened self view marked NOT Recording with a head-and-shoulders guide.

Record your answer

After a 3-second countdown your answer records while the response timer runs, and you click Done Answering to finish early.

Our drawing of a HireVue question screen while recording: a blue response time bar joined to a Done Answering button, your live video below it, and a note showing the 3-second countdown that comes before recording starts.

The end

When you finish you see Interview Received, and if you were cut off you can resume from your last unanswered question.

Our drawing of two HireVue status pages: Interview Received, saying the employer received your completed interview, and Interview in Progress with a Resume Interview button.

Your moves

  • Use the practice questions to check light, sound and framing.
  • Use prep time to pick one story, not to write a script.
  • Press Done Answering once your point is made.

Our own simplified drawings of each screen, not screenshots. Numbers on them are examples, not J.P. Morgan’s settings.

The rules: allowed and banned

Allowed

  • Practice questions, as often as you like
  • A camera and microphone check first
  • Extra time, if you request it

Banned

  • Reading off notes or pre-written documents
  • Software that generates your answers
  • Examples that are not your own
  • Making up or exaggerating

The banned list is from J.P. Morgan’s Digital Handbook, pages 16 to 19. It calls the HireVue its first-round interview. Some HireVue tips allow notes, but J.P. Morgan’s rule wins.

On the day: settings, device and scoring
  • Settings. Each employer chooses. HireVue allows 0 to 5 minutes of prep, 30 seconds to 15 minutes per answer, and 1 to 5 attempts, or unlimited. Set aside 45 minutes.
  • Device. You need a camera, a microphone, business attire and a quiet space. HireVue recommends Chrome and does not support Chromebooks.
  • No going back. Everyone gets the same questions. Once you submit an answer, you cannot return to it. If your connection drops, you pick up where you left off.
  • AI scoring. J.P. Morgan does not say if it uses it. Where used, HireVue scores only what you say, not your face, background or tone. You can opt out, and then recruiters review your answers.
  • Deadline. The link expires after the due date. J.P. Morgan says “many assessments may not be retaken for a designated timeframe”.

Practise the reported questions

eFinancialCareers reports these eight J.P. Morgan HireVue questions, from candidates’ own posts online. J.P. Morgan has not confirmed them. The notes and answers are ours.

Markets

“Tell us about a recent piece of news that you read about that affects the business division you are applying to.”

What they’re testing: whether you follow clients’ news.

Show a strong answer
  • One story from the past month: what happened, why it matters to clients, what you would watch next.

Motivation

“What motivates you?”

What they’re testing: drive that fits long, detailed work.

Show a strong answer
  • One motive, one short example, then a link to the analyst job.

Persistence

“Tell me about a time when you were challenged to be persistent to reach an important goal. What obstacles did you face? How did you overcome them?”

What they’re testing: resilience.

Show a strong answer
  • Use SHER. Name the hurdle, give two things you did, then what you learned.

New ideas

“Tell me about a time when you produced an innovative strategy for a unique problem. Describe the situation, your actions, and the outcome of the situation.”

What they’re testing: fresh thinking with a result.

Show a strong answer
  • Why the usual way failed, what you did instead, and the result in numbers.

Integrity

“Tell me about a time when you did the right thing, even when it was difficult.”

What they’re testing: judgement under pressure.

Show a strong answer
  • A real choice that cost you something. Say what you weighed and what happened.

Analysis

“How do you handle information and break it down?”

What they’re testing: a clear method.

Show a strong answer
  • Your steps: gather, sort, check. Then one short example.

Humility

“When was a time you showed humility?”

What they’re testing: whether you take feedback.

Show a strong answer
  • A time you asked for help or credited others, and what you changed.

Results

“Talk about a time you solved a business problem and got a result.”

What they’re testing: business sense.

Show a strong answer
  • A problem with money, time or customers at stake. End with the result in numbers.

J.P. Morgan interviews

Round 2 is live interviews with several people. J.P. Morgan does not publish how many, how long, or how technical they are.

FitYour stories and motivation

Why banking · Why J.P. Morgan · Setbacks

TechnicalCoaches say

Accounting · Valuation · DCF · Deals

Coaches say: expect your story, fit, deals and markets, and technical questions. Brain teasers are rare.

J.P. Morgan: “There can be multiple interviews in this round. They are held virtually and/or in person, depending on the program” (Digital Handbook). Studying abroad? Expect Zoom. Coaches call this round a superday. J.P. Morgan does not.

J.P. Morgan’s own rules: do and don’t
  • Do. Know why you chose this role and what you add. Prepare two questions. Pause before you answer. Be ready to take notes.
  • Don’t. Never read off notes or pre-written documents. Never use software to generate answers, unless invited to. Use only your own examples, and never exaggerate.
  • Stuck? Admit what you don’t know. J.P. Morgan says that beats trying “to bluff your way through”.

How to answer: J.P. Morgan’s SHER frame

The handbook gives its own frame. Build each story in four parts:

Situation

“What was happening?”

Hurdle

“What obstacles did you encounter?”

Endgame

“What actions did you take to navigate those obstacles?”

Reflection

“What did this process teach you?”

Follow-ups to rehearse

What exactly did you do?What would you change? Why J.P. Morgan?

The handbook’s shorter frame is Context, Action, Result. The follow-ups are ours.

See our guides on how to pass a job interview and the toughest interview questions.

Practise: one question at a time

Fit questions

Common fit questions, as coaches list them. The notes and answers are ours.

Your story

Walk me through your CV.

What they’re testing: a short story that ends at banking.

Show a strong answer
  • Two minutes, in time order. Two or three moments that led you here, then why now.

Motivation

Why investment banking?

What they’re testing: that you know the analyst job.

Show a strong answer
  • Name the work: models, client presentations, live deals. Link it to something you enjoyed doing.

Motivation

Why J.P. Morgan?

What they’re testing: research, not praise.

Show a strong answer
  • Name a team that fits you, plus one thing you learned from its people.

Setback

Tell me about a time you failed.

What they’re testing: honesty and resilience.

Show a strong answer
  • A real failure that was your fault. Spend most of the time on what you changed.

Markets

Tell me about a recent deal you followed.

What they’re testing: real interest in the work.

Show a strong answer
  • Who bought what, for roughly how much, why, and one risk.

Technical questions

Coaches say learn these first, in this order (Mergers & Inquisitions). J.P. Morgan publishes no syllabus. The answers are our short versions.

Accounting

Walk me through the three financial statements.

What they’re testing: how they link.

Show a strong answer
  • The income statement ends in net income. The cash flow statement starts there, adjusts for non-cash items and working capital, and ends with the change in cash. The balance sheet holds cash and equity, so it balances.

Accounting

Depreciation rises by £10, with a 25% tax rate. What changes?

What they’re testing: the links, under pressure.

Show a strong answer
  • Net income falls £7.50. Add back £10, so cash rises £2.50. Assets fall £7.50 (fixed assets down £10, cash up £2.50). Equity falls £7.50, so it balances.

Value

Enterprise value or equity value: what is the difference?

What they’re testing: who each value belongs to.

Show a strong answer
  • Equity value belongs to shareholders. Enterprise value is the core business, for all investors. Roughly, enterprise value is equity value plus debt, minus cash.

Valuation

How would you value a company?

What they’re testing: the three main methods.

Show a strong answer
  • Comparable companies and precedent deals value it against others. A DCF values its own cash flows. Precedents often come out higher, because buyers pay for control.

DCF

Walk me through a DCF.

What they’re testing: the steps, in order.

Show a strong answer
  • Project unlevered free cash flow: EBIT after tax, plus depreciation, minus capital spending and the rise in working capital. Add a terminal value. Discount both at the cost of capital to get enterprise value.

Visa sponsorship

Our reading: J.P. Morgan’s ads do not mention visa sponsorship. Do not assume this role is sponsored.

J.P. Morgan’s programme pages and FAQ say nothing either. If you need a visa, ask J.P. Morgan’s recruiters before you apply.

The Graduate visa and right to work
  • Graduate visa. It lasts “2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026” and “18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027” (GOV.UK). It needs no sponsor.
  • Summer interns. Student visa work rules depend on your course and term dates (GOV.UK).

Need sponsorship? See our guides to UK companies that sponsor visas and staying in the UK after studying. This is general information, so check GOV.UK.

Key takeaways

Before you apply

  1. Both London routes close on 1 November 2026, or sooner if places fill.
  2. You apply with a CV and the application questions, and you cannot edit after you submit.
  3. A 2:1 is required for the summer internship and preferred for the full-time job, in any subject.
  4. The HireVue video interview is the only test, and J.P. Morgan publishes none of its settings.
  5. Never read notes or use AI answer tools in the HireVue or the interviews.
  6. The ads say nothing on visas, so ask early if you need sponsorship.
