More on the form, email and how many to send
- The form. Your resume and “all relevant application questions”. The questions are not published. No cover letter is asked for.
- Email. A .edu or .ac.uk address “could result in delays receiving updates”.
- Three at most. J.P. Morgan suggests “no more than three summer internship program applications” (FAQs), and one Markets programme. Weighing banking too? See our J.P. Morgan investment banking playbook.
- No edits. To fix a submitted application, withdraw it and apply again with a new profile and email.

Missed the deadline? Your options
- Paris, open until 29 November 2026.Paris has closed too. Its deadline was set for 29 November 2026. The Paris Global Markets summer internship asks for fluency in English, with no French line. It is for students graduating September 2027 to August 2028.
- One Markets programme only. Both ads say so, so applying to London and Paris may conflict. Ask the recruiter first.
- Graduating in 2029? Spring Insights: Analyse & Trade is the first-year route in London, also closing on 1 November 2026.. It has closed too. Its deadline was set for 1 November 2026. Participants “may be considered for next steps linked to summer internship opportunities”. You may apply to one Spring Insights programme only.
- Next cycle. You can apply again “for the same program in future program years”.

Maths test format and timer
The ad: “you’ll receive an email invitation to complete (1) a video interview and (2) a math test, powered by HireVue”. The question count is from HireVue’s FAQ. Your invite shows J.P. Morgan’s settings.
Step through the HireVue
Video interview: required
Welcome and device check
Read how many questions there are, how long it takes and the due date, then let the page check your camera and microphone. Employers set their own version, so yours may differ.

Practise first
Answer a practice question in Practice Mode, then watch it back to check you can be seen and heard before you start the real interview.

Read the question while prep time runs
Read the question while the prep timer runs down, and click Start Recording when you are ready or wait for the timer to end.

Record your answer
After a 3-second countdown your answer records while the response timer runs, and you click Done Answering to finish early.

Your moves
- Use the practice questions to check light, sound and framing.
- Use prep time to pick one story, not to write a script.
- Press Done Answering once your point is made.
Maths test: format not published
Neither J.P. Morgan nor HireVue publishes its format. Its length, timer, topics and calculator rule are all unknown.
HireVue says its assessments can include “multiple choice or multiple selection questions”. The ad asks for algebra, statistics and probability. It does not say the test covers them.
Your moves
- Brush up the algebra, statistics and probability the ad names.
- Read the start screen for the timer and any calculator rule.
Our own simplified drawings of the video screens, not screenshots. Timers and counts are examples, not J.P. Morgan’s settings. The maths test is not drawn, as its screens are not published.
The rules: allowed and banned
Allowed
- Video practice questions, as often as you like
- A camera and microphone check first
- Extra time, if you request it
Banned
- Reading off notes or pre-written documents
- Software that generates your answers
- Examples not from your own experience
- Making up or exaggerating
The banned list is from J.P. Morgan’s Digital Handbook, pages 16 to 19. The maths test’s calculator rule is not published.
On the day: settings, device and scoring
- Settings. Each employer chooses: 0 to 5 minutes of prep, 30 seconds to 15 minutes per answer, 1 to 5 attempts or unlimited. Set aside 45 minutes.
- Bank timings. eFinancialCareers reports most banks give “30 seconds to prepare” and “90 or 120 seconds” to answer. Not J.P. Morgan’s own figure.
- Device. A camera, a microphone and a quiet space. Use Chrome. Chromebooks are not supported. J.P. Morgan recommends “professional business attire and a distraction-free environment”.
- No going back. Once you submit an answer, you cannot return to it. Only the employer can approve a retake. J.P. Morgan says many assessments “may not be retaken for a designated timeframe”.
- AI scoring. Not stated by J.P. Morgan. Where used, it scores only your words, and you can opt out.
Practise the reported questions
eFinancialCareers reports these eight J.P. Morgan HireVue questions, from candidates’ posts online. It does not say which division. J.P. Morgan has not confirmed them. The notes and answers are ours.
Markets
“Tell us about a recent piece of news that you read about that affects the business division you are applying to.”
What they’re testing: whether you follow markets.
Show a strong answer
- One story from the past fortnight: what moved, why, and who on a Markets desk would care.
Motivation
“What motivates you?”
What they’re testing: drive that fits fast, detailed work.
Show a strong answer
- One motive, one example, then a link to Markets work.
Persistence
“Tell me about a time when you were challenged to be persistent to reach an important goal. What obstacles did you face? How did you overcome them?”
What they’re testing: resilience.
Show a strong answer
- Use SHER: the hurdle, two things you did, what you learned.
New ideas
“Tell me about a time when you produced an innovative strategy for a unique problem. Describe the situation, your actions, and the outcome of the situation.”
What they’re testing: fresh thinking with a result.
Show a strong answer
- Why the usual way failed, what you did instead, the result.
Integrity
“Tell me about a time when you did the right thing, even when it was difficult.”
What they’re testing: judgement under pressure.
Show a strong answer
- A real choice that cost you something, and what happened.
Analysis
“How do you handle information and break it down?”
What they’re testing: a clear method.
Show a strong answer
- Your steps: gather, sort, check. Then one short example.
Humility
“When was a time you showed humility?”
What they’re testing: whether you take feedback.
Show a strong answer
- A time you asked for help or credited others, and what you changed.
Results
“Talk about a time you solved a business problem and got a result.”
What they’re testing: business sense.
Show a strong answer
- Money, time or customers at stake. End with the result in numbers.

J.P. Morgan Markets interviews
Round 2 is live interviews. J.P. Morgan does not publish the London Markets format: how many, how long, or what kind.
FitYour stories and motivation
Why Markets · Why J.P. Morgan · Setbacks
MarketsCoaches say
Market view · Trade idea · Quick maths
Coaches say sales and trading interviews mix fit, market, product and maths questions (Mergers & Inquisitions). Not J.P. Morgan’s list.
J.P. Morgan: “There can be multiple interviews in this round. They are held virtually and/or in person, depending on the program” (Digital Handbook). Coaches call this round a superday. J.P. Morgan does not.
J.P. Morgan’s own rules: do and don’t
- Do. Research the firm, know why you chose this role, and prepare two questions.
- Don’t. The same bans as the HireVue: no notes, no answer software, no borrowed or inflated examples.
- Stuck? Admit it and show “a willingness to learn”, rather than trying “to bluff your way through”.
- Studying abroad? If you are selected, “be prepared to do a video interview through Zoom” (FAQs).
How to answer: J.P. Morgan’s SHER frame
The handbook gives its own frame for story questions. Build each story in four parts:
Situation
“What was happening?”
Hurdle
“What obstacles did you encounter?”
Endgame
“What actions did you take to navigate those obstacles?”
Reflection
“What did this process teach you?”
Follow-ups to rehearse
What exactly did you do?What would you change? Why J.P. Morgan?
The follow-ups are ours.
See our guides on how to pass a job interview and the toughest interview questions.
Practise: one question at a time
Markets questions
Coaches say Markets interviews test “your knowledge of recent events, key market indices and prices, and stock pitches or other trade ideas” (Mergers & Inquisitions). These are practice questions, not J.P. Morgan’s. The answers are ours.
Motivation
Why Global Markets, and why your track?
What they’re testing: that you know the desk’s work.
Show a strong answer
- Name the work from the ad: monitor markets, develop trade ideas, conduct portfolio reviews. Link it to something you enjoyed.
Trade idea
“Pitch me a stock (or FX, option, bond, or other trade ideas).”
What they’re testing: a view with a reason and a risk.
Show a strong answer
- The idea in one line. Two reasons, one coming event that could move it, the main risk, and when you would get out.
Market view
What moved markets this week?
What they’re testing: a daily habit.
Show a strong answer
- The move, with one number. Why it moved, and what you would watch next. Practise on a recent Making Sense episode.
Product
What happens to bond prices when interest rates rise?
What they’re testing: basic product sense.
Show a strong answer
- Existing bond prices fall, because their fixed coupons now pay less than new bonds. Longer bonds fall more.
Product
What is an option?
What they’re testing: plain explanations.
Show a strong answer
- The right, not the duty, to buy (a call) or sell (a put) at a set price by a set date. The buyer pays a premium for it.
Quick maths
Our practice questions, not J.P. Morgan’s. Coaches say trading interviews can include mental maths, such as “Quick, what’s 37 x 7?” (Mergers & Inquisitions). The same source says sales candidates rarely get them.
Mental maths
“Quick, what’s 37 x 7?”
What they’re testing: speed and a clear method.
Show a strong answer
- 259. Say the method: 35 x 7 is 245, plus 2 x 7 is 14.
Probability
You roll two fair dice. What is the chance the total is 7?
What they’re testing: probability, which the ad names.
Show a strong answer
- 1 in 6. Six of the 36 outcomes add to 7. Count them out loud.
Percentages
A stock rises 10%, then falls 10%. Where does it end?
What they’re testing: compounding.
Show a strong answer
- Down 1%. 1.1 times 0.9 is 0.99.
Expected value
You roll one fair die. What is the expected value?
What they’re testing: expected value, a probability basic.
Show a strong answer
- 3.5. The faces 1 to 6 add to 21, and 21 divided by 6 is 3.5. Say each step out loud.
Your story bank: a worksheet to print or copy
