Where you work and how you train
  • Location. The job board lists the ad as “UK – Field based”. Newton says “you’ll work on-site, from the factory floor to the boardroom”.
  • Offices. “Our consultants are based on-site for each project, so they don’t often spend time in our offices.” Newton has two UK offices, “one in London and one in Oxfordshire”.
  • Travel. You must “Have the ability to travel in the UK and work away from home for periods of time”. Newton says it never expects you to “leave home before 6am on a Monday, be home later than 6pm on a Friday or work on weekends”.
  • Training. A “five-week induction” at Newton’s “Kingston Bagpuize office in Oxfordshire”. “At around 10 months, you’ll do a three-day course” on efficiency and engagement. “Over two years you’ll progress to Senior Consultant.”
  • Paths. After core training you can “continue as an Operations Consultant or direct your skills further into Digital & AI or People & Change”.

What Newton looks for

No consulting experience needed. Newton says: “What matters to us is your potential and skills.”

Newton sums up the job in four lines. Have a short story for each.

“The big picture and the small detail”

Show it by: a project where you kept the goal in view and still checked the numbers.

“Dive into the unfamiliar”

Show it by: a time you learned a new subject fast to solve a problem.

“Without all the answers”

Show it by: a time you asked a hard question or acted on feedback.

“Own your projects”

Show it by: something you ran end to end, including what went wrong.

Newton’s seven attributes, in its own words

Newton’s Why join Newton page lists “seven key skills and attributes we look for in our Consultants”:

  • “Analytical & Problem-Solving Capability”
  • “Drive & Resilience”
  • “Curiosity”
  • “Empathy & Self-Awareness”
  • “Team Spirit & Humility”
  • “Exceptional People Skills”
  • “Agility & Adaptability”

The work itself: “mapping processes and analysing data to identify opportunities for them to improve their operations”. Then you “make them happen”.

04/10Stage 1 · Apply

How to apply

Apply now. Newton’s one UK Graduate Consultant ad was open when we checked on 17 October 2026.

Newton’s job board gives a closing date of 25 December 2026 at 23:55 GMT.

Newton’s FAQ: “we recruit on a rolling basis and will close once all opportunities are full (usually, March).”

So the role can close before the board date if places fill. Newton also says there is no benefit in applying early, and it advises “taking your time in crafting your application”. Our advice: take a week over the form, then submit well before 25 December.

Newton says: “Simply fill out our online form and answer some written questions about your education, work experience and achievements. No cover letter needed.” It publishes no word limits.

The entry rules, in Newton’s words
  • Year. “Be in your penultimate or final year of university or a recent graduate, from any degree background.”
  • Grades. “Have a minimum of AAB at A-Level or equivalent”. Newton adds that “context will be considered” for slightly lower grades.
  • No 2:1 rule. Newton’s FAQ: “Is a 2:1 required to join the Graduate programme? No, our minimum benchmark is AAB at A-level or equivalent”.
  • Travel. “Have the ability to travel in the UK and work away from home for periods of time.”
  • Right to work. “Have the right to work in the UK.” See Visa sponsorship.

Your written answers: do and don’t

Do

“I mapped our society’s sign-up process and cut the queue time from 20 minutes to 5.”

Newton maps processes and analyses data. Show you did that, with a number.

Don’t

“I am a hard-working team player with great communication skills.”

A claim with no example tells Newton nothing about your achievements.

Last year’s guide video said the form had “a question about your proudest achievement”. Pick that story first.

Newton asks for no CV, but your form answers and interview stories start with what you have done. Our CV achievement examples help you find a result for each role. • Summer internships. For penultimate-year students: Pioneering Potential (July) and the Summer Academy (August). Newton says “We usually open applications for our summer internships at the end of each year.” Interns who shine are offered a graduate place. Newton cannot sponsor Skilled Worker visas for its internships.
  • Insight events. Newton’s job board lists four: a networking breakfast on 12 November, an insight evening on 24 November, an insight day for final-year students on 2 December and an insight day for women in STEM on 4 December 2026.

The online assessments

Three parts: a quiz that is not marked, cognitive tests, then a short video. Newton says “You can take breaks in-between each of the assessments.”

Newton names no test provider. It publishes no length, question count, pass mark or practice test.

Preview quiz: not marked

Newton says: “You’ll start with our Realistic Job Preview Quiz, which isn’t assessed”. It is there to help you decide if Newton suits you.

Your moves

  • Answer honestly, since the quiz is for you.
  • Note one thing about the job that surprised you. It makes a good answer to “why Newton?”

Cognitive tests: marked

Newton says you will take “cognitive tests covering logical reasoning, numerical skills, and data interpretation”.

Your moves

  • Refresh percentage change, ratios and reading tables and charts.
  • Practise spotting the rule in a pattern, one step at a time.
  • Use the breaks. Start each test fresh.

Video interview: two questions

Newton says: “You’ll answer two questions about your experiences”. It adds: “We have real assessors screening these”, “not AI”. Newton says to “treat this like an in-person interview”.

Your moves

  • Have two stories ready: one team story and one about a problem you solved.
  • Look at the camera, not your face on screen.
  • Dress and sit as you would for a live interview.

The moves are ours, built on Newton’s own words.

What last year’s guide added (2025-26)
  • Last year’s tests. Newton’s 2025-26 video described “numerical and data interpretation abilities as well as inductive and deductive reasoning”.
  • Last year’s video. It had “two to three questions” over “10 to 15 minutes”, with “time to digest and plan your response”. This year’s page says two questions.
  • The quiz. Last year’s guide said it “can’t negatively impact your application”.

06/10Stage 3 · Selection day

Selection day

Selection day is “our virtual assessment centre”. Newton describes “a day of group exercises, technical exercises and a mini interview, based on real Newton case studies.”

You also meet some of Newton’s consultants and can ask questions in a Q&A.

Newton's selection day and final round, side by side. Selection day is virtual, with group exercises, technical exercises, a mini interview and a Q and A with consultants, based on real Newton case studies. The final round starts with an unassessed dinner the night before, then two 45-minute interviews with senior team members: one on competency and one a technical case study. Newton does not publish where the final is held, or how soon you hear back this cycle.
Two rounds after the online stage. Newton does not say where the final is held. (click to enlarge)
Last year’s day, in order (2025-26 guide)
  • Partner introductions. “about 10 minutes to speak to your partner”, then you introduce them. “it is still part of the assessment process.”
  • Q&A. Newton consultants talk about their careers, and “you’ve got the opportunity to ask some questions as well”.
  • Group exercise. Each person gets different information. The group pieces it together and makes recommendations.
  • Technical exercise. Numbers and data: “percentage change, ratios, graphs”.
  • Lunch cut. “not all candidates will make it past this point”.
  • Technical one-to-one. “about 10 minutes to read through a brief which is based on a real Newton project”, then “about half an hour working through some numerical and logic problems with the assessor”.
  • Mini interview. “a 30-minute interview one-on-one with one of the assessors”.

Source: Newton’s Graduate Guide to Selection Day and Graduate Guide to the Selection Process, 30 September 2025. This year’s order may differ.

How to answer

Group exercise

Last year’s guide said to “make sure you hear all the voices in the room”.

Your moves

  • Share your piece of the information early and clearly.
  • Invite a quiet member in by name.
  • Pull the group back to the question when time runs short.

Technical exercises

Last year’s guide said to “take a breath and pause”. It added: “The assessors are there to support and coach you”, and “if you’re not sure on something, just ask.” A graduate in the same guide said to use the 10 minutes of reading to “really focus on the questions you’ve been given”.

Read

Find the question and the numbers that matter.

Plan

Say how you will work it out before you start.

Work

Write each step so the assessor can follow.

So what

Say what the answer means for the client.

This frame is ours.

Mini interview

Last year’s guide said the mini interview looks at “self-awareness, resilience, and teamwork”. It said to know your “top strengths, weaknesses” with “examples to back that up”. Newton’s 2026 tips suggest “the STAR method” and say “don’t memorize a script”.

Situation

Where and when, in one line.

Task

What you had to achieve.

Action

What you did, not the team.

Result

What changed, then what went well and what you would do better.

See our guides on how to pass a job interview and the toughest interview questions.

Practise: interview prompts

Newton publishes no question list. These prompts are our own, built from Newton’s seven attributes and its selection day guide.

Competency

Drive and resilience

“Tell us about a time you kept going when a plan failed.”

What they’re testing: “Drive & Resilience”.

Show a strong answer
  • Name the setback in one line. Spend most of the answer on what you changed and why. End with the result and what you learned.

Curiosity

“Tell us about something you taught yourself because you wanted to know how it worked.”

What they’re testing: “Curiosity”.

Show a strong answer
  • Say what sparked it and how you learned. Then show how you used it to solve a real problem.

Self-awareness

“What is a weakness you are working on?”

What they’re testing: “Empathy & Self-Awareness”.

Show a strong answer
  • Pick a real weakness. Give one example of it, then what you now do about it and the evidence it is working.

People skills

“Tell us about a time you won over someone who disagreed with you.”

What they’re testing: “Exceptional People Skills”.

Show a strong answer
  • Show you listened first. Explain what mattered to them and how you changed your case. End with what you agreed.

Numbers

Percentage change

“Output rose from 1,200 to 1,380 units a week. What is the percentage change?”

What they’re testing: percentage change, which Newton’s guide names.

Show a strong answer
  • Change over the old value: 180 ÷ 1,200 = 15%. Say the method out loud before the answer.

Reverse percentage

“After a 20% rise, output is 1,440 units a week. What was it before?”

What they’re testing: percentage change, worked backwards.

Show a strong answer
  • Divide by 1.2: 1,440 ÷ 1.2 = 1,200. Taking 20% off 1,440 gives 1,152, which is wrong. The 20% was on the old value.

Ratios

“Line A makes 450 units and line B makes 300. What is the ratio, and what share comes from line A?”

What they’re testing: ratios and shares.

Show a strong answer
  • 450 : 300 is 3 : 2. Line A makes 3 of every 5 units, so 60%.

Graphs

“A chart shows waiting times falling from 40 days to 30. Someone calls it a 33% fall. Are they right?”

What they’re testing: reading data with care.

Show a strong answer
  • No. The fall is 10 days on a base of 40, so 25%. 33% uses the new value as the base.

Final interview and offer

Dinner the night before, then two 45-minute interviews. Newton calls the dinner “unassessed”.

The dinner

“an unassessed dinner with other candidates and Newton team members not involved in your selection process”. Use it to ask honest questions.

Interview 1: competency

45 minutes. Bring your story bank.

Interview 2: technical case study

45 minutes. Last year’s guide said it tests “mathematical and structured problem solving abilities”.

Where

Newton does not say where the final is held. Ask when you are invited.

Newton says: “The following day, you’ll take part in two 45-minute interviews with senior team members. One will be focused on competency and the other a technical case study.”
