05/10Stage 2 · Video or coding test

Most per answer, after 3 minutes’ prep
BlackRock’s FAQ says: “For each question, you’ll have three minutes to prepare and up to 90 seconds to respond. The entire process takes less than 10 minutes and must be completed in one sitting within five days of submitting your application.”
Step through the HireVue video
HireVue video interview: up to 3 questions, 5 days
Welcome and device check
Read how many questions there are, how long it takes and the due date, then let the page check your camera and microphone. Employers set their own version, so yours may differ.

Practise first
Answer a practice question in Practice Mode, then watch it back to check you can be seen and heard before you start the real interview.

Read the question while prep time runs
Read the question while the prep timer runs down, and click Start Recording when you are ready or wait for the timer to end.

Record your answer
After a 3-second countdown your answer records while the response timer runs, and you click Done Answering to finish early.

Your moves
- Check light and sound on the practice question.
- Use the 3 minutes to pick one example.
- Finish well inside 90 seconds.
Our own simplified drawings of each screen, not screenshots. The numbers on them are examples, not BlackRock’s settings. BlackRock asks up to three questions, with 3 minutes to prepare and up to 90 seconds to answer each. It takes under 10 minutes in one sitting, within five days. You take it once for each function, with no retake.
BlackRock names the platform only once. Its FAQ sends tech problems to HireVue’s support team. The questions are “based on the program you applied to”.
Set up: HireVue’s own advice
- Room. “Choose a space where you are comfortable, is well-lit, and has a good internet connection” (HireVue FAQ).
- Power. Keep your device “fully charged or plugged in while you conduct your interview”.
The coding test: Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling only
Two technology functions take a coding test as their pre-interview assessment. BlackRock does not name the coding platform.
BlackRock’s FAQ says the coding test “includes a series of coding questions followed by one video question. You’ll have five calendar days to complete the coding portion, which typically takes about 60 minutes. The video question must be completed in one sitting.”
BlackRock’s January 2026 video describes it slightly differently: “two coding problems”, with “a short video explaining your thought process, approach, and solution after each question”. In that video, Analytics & Modeling codes in Python. In Software Engineering, “you can choose your preferred programming language”.
