Graduate Area Manager Programme · UK · 2026/27 recruitment season

Then come five stages: a form with tests, a video interview, a psychometric test, an Individual Assessment and a final interview. Pay starts at £52,020, with a fully expensed company car.

Aldi’s entry rules, in its words
  • Degree. “A 2:1 degree in any discipline”.
  • School grades. “96 UCAS points or 63 Scottish Highers (or equivalent on the old tariff) from your top 3 A-Levels/ Scottish Highers (or the equivalent from other relevant qualifications)”.
  • Licence. “A driving licence”. You collect your car keys on day one.
  • Right to work. “The right to work in the UK”. See the visa chapter.
Scams, AI and technical help
  • Scams. “Aldi never charges fees or asks for personal data, like bank details, at any stage of our recruitment or onboarding process.”
  • AI. Aldi’s placement FAQ says you may use AI to prepare for interviews. It adds “we want to hear your own voice, ideas and experiences – not just what AI suggests might be the right answer.” The graduate page says nothing on AI.
  • Technical help. Aldi’s contact page sends problems with the form to its application system’s help centre.

Your form and CV: do and don’t

Do

“Ran the Saturday shift of six at a café and cut waste by 15% in two months”

Area managers lead teams and run stores. Show both, with a number.

Don’t

“Hard-working team player with excellent communication skills”

Every applicant writes this. It shows Aldi nothing.

Aldi does not say whether its form asks for a CV or written answers. Those details sit in the job ad. Our CV achievement examples show how to turn duties into results. Getting ready to apply for jobs in the UK? Check your CV for free: see it the way a recruiter does, then fix each problem.

Still at university, or not eligible yet? Your options
  • A 12-month placement. For students “currently studying towards an undergraduate degree” who want a sandwich year before their final year. When we checked on 19 October 2026, Aldi said the window for its Retail Management Placements “starting July 2027 is now OPEN”. They pay a “£30,000 salary for the 12 months”. See the placements page.
  • The way back. After a placement “you could be offered the opportunity to return after graduation on our Graduate Area Manager Programme. Your Direct Leader will need to recommend you first though.”
  • Next season. Aldi gives no closing date for 2026/27. If this window closes before you apply, watch the programme page for the next one.

05/10Aldi stages 1 to 3 · Online

The online tests and video interview

You take tests twice: with the form, then again after the video interview. Aldi does not name its test provider.

2 rounds

Stage 1 and stage 3

Not named

No provider on Aldi’s pages

Not published

Length and question count

Stage 1: “tests that will assess your judgement and personal qualities”. They are “designed to measure your core skills and analytical abilities”. Stage 3: “an online psychometric test”, “designed to measure your core skills and personal qualities”.

Aldi's two rounds of online tests side by side. Round 1 comes with the application form. It assesses judgement and personal qualities and measures core skills and analytical abilities. Round 3 is an online psychometric test after the video interview. It measures core skills and personal qualities. Aldi publishes the length of neither test and does not name its test provider.
Stages 1 and 3, from Aldi’s programme page. Lengths and question counts are not published. (click to enlarge)

What each kind of question asks of you

Judgement

Aldi says the stage 1 tests “assess your judgement”. Tests of judgement usually show a short work scene, then ask what you would do.

  • Picture yourself as a store or area manager, not a shop assistant.
  • Choose actions that fix the problem and keep the team on side.
  • Answer as you would really act. Do not guess the “right” profile.

Analytical

Aldi says the tests measure “core skills and analytical abilities”. Expect to read figures or text and draw a conclusion. The format is not published.

  • Practise percentages, ratios and reading simple tables.
  • Work at a steady pace. Skip a question that stalls you, if the test allows it.
  • Read each question twice before you answer.

Personal qualities

Both rounds look at “personal qualities”, “to see if we’re right for each other”. There is no right answer to learn.

  • Re-read the traits in chapter 03. Know which ones are truly you.
  • Answer quickly and honestly. Mixed answers look less reliable.
  • Take it when you are rested, in a quiet room.

The question types are our reading of Aldi’s words. Aldi publishes no sample questions, so your screens may differ. For general practice, see our tips on psychometric tests.

The video interview: Aldi’s stage 2

Aldi calls it “your golden opportunity to showcase your knowledge of Aldi and brilliant leadership skills”. It does not say if the interview is live or recorded.

Knowledge of Aldi

Visit a store before the interview. Note the layout, the pace at the tills and how the team works. Use what you saw, not what you read.

Leadership

Bring two short stories where you led people, each with a clear result.

The set-up

Use a quiet, well-lit room. Look at the camera, not the screen.

The advice lines are ours. Not published: the number of questions, the time per answer and any retakes.

06/10Aldi stage 4 · Assessment

The Individual Assessment: presentation and interview

You “deliver a short presentation, followed by a one to one competency based interview with an Aldi assessor”. Aldi says “We’re looking for your drive, professionalism and leadership skills.”

Aldi's last two stages side by side. Stage 4, the Individual Assessment, is a short presentation followed by a one-to-one competency interview with an Aldi assessor, who looks for drive, professionalism and leadership skills. Stage 5 is a final interview with the Regional Managing Director, once you have passed everything else. Aldi does not publish the presentation topic, its length or the format of the final interview.
Stages 4 and 5, from Aldi’s programme page. (click to enlarge)

How the presentation works

Aldi publishes no topic and no time limit. Your invite should say both. Until then, prepare the shape.

One point

Say your main message in the first minute.

Real detail

Use what you saw yourself, such as a store visit.

On time

Rehearse with a timer. Finish early, not late.

Questions

Expect follow-ups. Answer briefly, then stop.

This shape is our advice. Aldi’s page does not say the presentation is about a store.

How to answer: STAR, built on Aldi’s three traits

A competency interview asks for real examples. STAR is the usual shape. Aldi publishes no answer method of its own.

Practise: questions built from Aldi’s words

Leadership questions

Aldi publishes no interview questions. We turned its own words into practice questions.

Inspire

Tell us about a time you motivated a group to do more than they planned.

What they’re testing: “it’s my job to inspire them”.

Show a strong answer
  • Name the group and what they were aiming for.
  • Show what you said or did to lift them.
  • End with the result and what the group said.

Teamwork

Describe a goal you could only reach with other people.

What they’re testing: “It’s not possible to achieve goals without my team”.

Show a strong answer
  • Explain why one person could not do it alone.
  • Show how you split the work and checked progress.
  • Credit others, but make your own part clear.

Hard talk

Tell us about a time you had to tell someone their work was not good enough.

What they’re testing: leadership with professionalism, two of the traits Aldi names.

Show a strong answer
  • Show you prepared and spoke in private.
  • Give the facts, then agree a next step.
  • Say what changed afterwards.

Pressure

Describe a time plans changed at the last minute and you had to lead the response.

What they’re testing: staying calm and in charge when a store day goes wrong.

Show a strong answer
  • Set the scene in one line.
  • Show how you decided what mattered first.
  • End with the outcome and one lesson.

Drive questions

Aldi wants “Drive, ambition and a positive attitude”. We turned that into practice questions.

Ambition

Tell us about a goal you set yourself and how you reached it.

What they’re testing: drive, the first trait Aldi names for this stage.

Show a strong answer
  • Pick a goal nobody asked you to set.
  • Show the obstacles and how you kept going.
  • Give the result with a number.

Effective

Describe a time you made something work better, not just faster.

What they’re testing: “It’s not just about being efficient. It’s about being effective too.”

Show a strong answer
  • Say what was wrong before.
  • Show what you changed and why.
  • Prove it worked, with a before and after.

Setback

Tell us about a time you failed and what you did next.

What they’re testing: a positive attitude when things go wrong.

Show a strong answer
  • Own the failure in one honest line.
  • Spend most of the answer on what you did next.
  • Show what you do differently now.

Juggling

How did you manage a time when study, work and other duties all peaked at once?

What they’re testing: whether you can “manage your own diary”, as Aldi says area managers do.

Show a strong answer
  • List what was competing for your time.
  • Show how you planned and what you dropped.
  • End with what you delivered.

Why Aldi questions

The video interview asks for “your knowledge of Aldi”. Expect these themes again later.

Why Aldi

Why do you want to join Aldi?

What they’re testing: whether you have “the Aldi attitude”.

Show a strong answer
  • Give one reason from Aldi’s own page, such as the training year.
  • Add one reason from your own store visit.
  • Link both to the kind of leader you want to be.

The role

Why area management, rather than a head office role?

What they’re testing: that you know you will run stores and lead store teams.

Show a strong answer
  • Show you know the role: your own group of stores.
  • Say why you want to lead people on the shop floor.
  • Mention the weeks of stacking shelves, and why that appeals.

The store

What did you notice on your last visit to an Aldi store?

What they’re testing: real knowledge of Aldi, not facts from a website.

Show a strong answer
  • Name two things that worked well and one you would improve.
  • Explain why each matters to customers or staff.
  • Keep any criticism specific and fair.

Your future

Where do you see yourself after the training year?

What they’re testing: that you will stay and grow with Aldi.

Show a strong answer
  • Start with running your own area well.
  • Name a later option Aldi lists, such as Project Area Manager.
  • Keep it humble and specific.

07/10Aldi stage 5 · Final

The final interview and your offer

The last stage is a final interview with the Regional Managing Director. Aldi says “If you’ve passed everything else”, this is next, “So make sure you’re prepared!”

Who you meet

The Regional Managing Director. Each region has its own Head Office, led by a Managing Director.

Know the region

Our advice: learn the stores and towns in the region you applied to. You may run some of them.

Join the dots

Our advice: keep your stories consistent with the video interview and the assessment.

Not published

The length, the format, the place and when you hear back.

Before you start: what an offer depends on
  • Driving licence. “You’ll collect your keys on day one, so you’ll need a full driving license.”
  • Right to work. “Before commencing employment, you will be responsible for demonstrating that you have a right to work.” You show original documents, such as a passport, birth certificate, visa or share code. From Aldi’s diversity and inclusion page.
  • Grades. The 2:1 and the UCAS points from the entry rules in chapter 04.

08/10

Visa sponsorship

Aldi says nothing about visa sponsorship on any page we read. Its entry rules ask for “The right to work in the UK”.

Our reading: if you would need a visa to work in the UK, ask Aldi before you apply. Aldi’s contact page lists its recruitment team.

The Graduate visa and right to work
  • Graduate visa. It lasts “2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026” and “18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027” (GOV.UK).
  • Right to work. Aldi checks it before you start. GOV.UK publishes the employer’s guide to right to work checks.

Need sponsorship? See our guides to UK companies that sponsor visas and staying in the UK after studying. This is general information, so check GOV.UK.
