What Goldman looks for in Markets
Goldman wants “dynamic, quick-thinking self-starters who have a real passion for the markets”. Show each trait with proof on your CV and in your answers.
A real passion for markets
Show it by: a view you formed, tracked and changed when the facts changed.
Quick thinking
Show it by: a fast decision you got right, and how you checked it.
Self-starter
Show it by: something you began without being asked.
Strong relationships
Show it by: trust you built over weeks, not one meeting.
Clear communication
Show it by: a hard idea you explained in plain words.
Sound risk judgement
Show it by: a risk you spotted early and raised.
What Goldman says, in its own words
- Markets. “The ability to communicate effectively and build strong relationships with clients and colleagues from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences is crucial.”
- Firm-wide. The CEO’s note to 2026 interns: “Raise the bar. Pair high standards with prudent risk management. Be thoughtful, escalate early, and take accuracy seriously.”

More on the four-application cap and the form
- Four a year. You get four applications a year across all of Goldman. Each business and city counts as one. A fifth is withdrawn automatically.
- One Markets ad. The 2027 London ad covered FICC and Equities together, so it used one slot, not two.
- The form. It sits behind a login on Goldman’s portal, so we have not seen its questions.
Your CV: do and don’t
Do
“Wrote a weekly markets note for 60 society members for 10 weeks, naming the main risk to each view”

- London sales and trading off-cycle. The London FICC and Equities off-cycle internship was first listed on 19 September 2026. The ad says the programme “varies in length based on program/university for undergraduate students”. Goldman’s off-cycle page lists 3, 6 or 12 months, also for recent graduates.
- Other cities. A Paris sales and trading off-cycle was listed too. Older off-cycle ads were also listed in several cities, so check each start date.
- Quant Strats. A London FICC and Equities Quantitative Strats internship was first listed on 7 October 2026. It sits in Engineering, so it adds a HackerRank test.

Read how many questions there are, how long it takes and the due date, then let the page check your camera and microphone. Employers set their own version, so yours may differ.

Practise first
Answer a practice question in Practice Mode, then watch it back to check you can be seen and heard before you start the real interview.

Read the question while prep time runs
Read the question while the prep timer runs down, and click Start Recording when you are ready or wait for the timer to end.

Record your answer
After a 3-second countdown your answer records while the response timer runs, and you click Done Answering to finish early.

Your moves
- Use the practice questions to check light, sound and framing.
- Use prep time to pick one story or one market move, not to write a script.
- Press Done Answering once your point is made.

The rules: allowed and not stated
Allowed
- Practice questions, as often as you like
- A camera and microphone check first
- Adjustments, if you ask Goldman
Not stated by Goldman
- Whether notes are allowed
- Prep time, answer time and attempts
- Any rule on AI tools
Goldman publishes no rule on AI tools for applicants. Write and speak in your own words. The allowed list is from HireVue’s FAQ and Goldman’s disability statement.
On the day: settings, device and scoring
- Settings. HireVue lets each employer choose: 0 to 5 minutes of prep, 30 seconds to 15 minutes per answer, and 1 to 5 attempts or unlimited.
- Reported. eFinancialCareers reports “30 seconds of prep and 90 seconds to answer (for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley)”. It names no city or division. Goldman has not confirmed it.
- Device. A camera, a microphone and a quiet space. Use Chrome. Chromebooks are not supported.
- No going back. Once you submit an answer, you cannot return to it. Only the employer can approve a retake.
- AI scoring. Goldman does not say whether it uses it. Where used, it scores only your words, and you can opt out.
Practise the reported questions
eFinancialCareers reports these Goldman HireVue questions, from candidates’ posts online. It does not say which division. Goldman has not confirmed them. The notes and answers are ours.
Markets
“Talk about a recent event that impacted financial markets.”
What they’re testing: whether you follow markets.
Show a strong answer

Risk
“How do you identify and assess the key risks in a new project or investment?”
What they’re testing: risk judgement.
Show a strong answer
- List the risks. Rank them by how likely and how costly. Say what you would watch, and when you would raise it.
Integrity
“If you accidentally sent an email containing confidential information to a client, how would you first respond?”
What they’re testing: honesty and speed.
Show a strong answer
- Tell your manager straight away, follow the firm’s process, and do not try to hide it. Then say how you would stop it happening again.
Motivation
“Why [this department], specifically, for the long term?”
What they’re testing: real reasons.
Show a strong answer
- Name the work Goldman describes: making markets and serving clients. Link it to something you have done.
City
“Why [this city]?”
What they’re testing: commitment to London.
Show a strong answer
- One reason about the work in London and one about you. Keep both true.
Teamwork
“Describe a time you had to work with a difficult team member.”
What they’re testing: partnership.
Show a strong answer
- What made it hard, what you did, the result and what you learned. Stay fair to the other person.

MarketsPrep guides cover
Market view · Trade idea · Products
Prep guides cover market, product and fit questions for sales and trading (Mergers & Inquisitions). Not Goldman’s list.
Goldman: “Typically, we conduct between two and five interviews for campus hires, depending on the division” (Prepare page). It does not publish the London format: virtual or in person, or the question types.
What Goldman does and does not say
- Desks. Goldman does not say how summer analysts are matched to desks, or whether they rotate.
- Maths. Goldman says nothing about mental maths. Mergers & Inquisitions says sales candidates are “extremely unlikely to receive brainteaser or mental math questions”. It says to worry about them “only if you’re interviewing for trading roles”.

Practise: one question at a time
Quoted questions come from eFinancialCareers’ reported Goldman list or a prep guide (Mergers & Inquisitions). Goldman has not confirmed them. Unquoted questions and all answers are ours.
Markets now
Trade idea
“Pitch me a stock (or FX, option, bond, or other trade ideas).”
What they’re testing: a view with a reason and a risk.
Show a strong answer
- The idea in one line. Two reasons, one coming event that could move it, the main risk, and where you would get out.
Market view
“Tell me about current events and how they tie into potential risk factors.”
What they’re testing: a daily habit.
Show a strong answer
- One event, the market it moved, and the risk it raises for a client. Practise on a recent episode of The Markets.
Rates
What happens to bond prices when interest rates rise?
What they’re testing: basic product sense.
Show a strong answer
- Existing bond prices fall, because their fixed coupons now pay less than new bonds. Longer bonds fall more.
Options
“Explain the Greeks and how they impact option prices.”
What they’re testing: product knowledge.
Show a strong answer
- Delta: how the option price moves with the underlying. Gamma: how delta changes. Vega: sensitivity to volatility. Theta: value lost as time passes.
Why Markets
Motivation
“Why do you want to work in banking/sales/trading/etc.?”
What they’re testing: that you know the work.
Show a strong answer
- Pick sales or trading. Name the work Goldman describes, such as sharing “trading ideas” with clients. Link it to something you did.
The firm
“How does Goldman Sachs make money?”
What they’re testing: business sense.
Show a strong answer
- Start with your division: Markets earns by making markets and serving client trades. Then name the firm’s other main businesses from its latest results.
Market interest
“What interests you about world markets?”
What they’re testing: “a real passion for the markets”.
Show a strong answer
- One market you follow, a view you formed, and how it changed when the facts changed.
Why Goldman
“Why Goldman Sachs?”
What they’re testing: a reason only Goldman fits.
Show a strong answer
- Name a desk you want from Goldman’s own Markets pages. Link it to something you did, then say why not another bank.
Clients and judgement
Clients
“If you had a disagreement with a client, how would you resolve it?”
What they’re testing: relationships under strain.
Show a strong answer
- Listen first and check the facts. Explain your view plainly. Escalate early if it touches risk or the rules.
Confidentiality
“How would you maintain client confidentiality between a manager and a client?”
What they’re testing: judgement and trust.
Show a strong answer
- Share only what each person needs, follow the firm’s rules, and ask for guidance when unsure.
Ethics
“If you were aware that one of your co-workers was doing something unethical, what would you do?”
What they’re testing: Goldman’s “Be thoughtful, escalate early”.
Show a strong answer
- Check what you saw, then raise it early with your manager. Do not ignore it or try to fix it alone.
Communication
“How do you manage a difficult conversation?”
What they’re testing: the ability to “communicate effectively and build strong relationships”.
Show a strong answer
- A real example: why it was hard, how you prepared, what you said plainly and how the relationship held up.
Numbers under pressure
Time value
“Would you rather take 100$ now, or 10$ each week for 10 weeks?”
What they’re testing: reasoning about time and risk.
Show a strong answer
- $100 now. The total is the same, but money now can earn a return and carries no risk of late payment.
Portfolio
“How would you invest a portfolio of $100m?”
What they’re testing: questions before answers.
Show a strong answer
- Ask first: the goal, the time frame and the loss the client can bear. Then a simple split, and how you would manage the risk.
Bond maths
“Do you know what metrics like duration and convexity mean?”
What they’re testing: product knowledge.
Show a strong answer
- Duration: how much a bond’s price moves when rates change. Convexity: how that sensitivity itself changes as rates move.
Estimate
“How many tennis balls can fit in a [Boeing] 747?”
What they’re testing: a method, not the number. M&I links these to trading roles.
Show a strong answer
- Say each step aloud: the cabin’s rough size, one ball’s size, then space lost to seats and gaps. Round as you go.
