Where these facts come from
  • The ad. The London ad was posted on 29 July 2026. It says: “Fill in the online form and upload your CV and cover letter (.doc or .pdf format only)”.
  • The date. The ad gives Tuesday 27 October 2026 as the closing date. It adds: “Screening of applications will happen on a rolling basis”.
  • The office. Kearney’s UK and Ireland page puts it “on the 12th floor of the historic Adelphi building”. It lists more than 115 consultants and 50 management services staff.
  • The work. Business Analysts spend time “developing models, performing complex analyses, and working on both onsite and offsite research” (roles page).
  • Pay. The ad says only “a competitive remuneration package”. It names a pension, medical insurance for your family, flexible work and externships.

03/10

What Kearney looks for

Kearney names five values it gauges in interviews. The ad adds one more: a doer. Show each with proof on your CV, in your letter and in interviews.

Curiosity

Show it by: a question you asked that changed the answer.

Boldness

Show it by: a call you made and stood behind.

Generosity

Show it by: time you gave to help someone else succeed.

Solidarity

Show it by: a time you backed your team when it was hard.

Passion

Show it by: something you keep doing for love, with a result.

A doer

Show it by: something you started and finished.

What Kearney says, in its own words
  • The ad. Kearney wants “collaborative, insightful, and inquisitive problem-solvers who do not accept the first thing in front of them and who are always unapologetically themselves”.
  • The values. “We gauge your curiosity, capacity for generosity, boldness, solidarity, and passions” (Ace the interview).
  • Not the loudest. Kearney is “not looking for the loudest candidate or the one who uses the most consulting buzzwords”.
  • Your own answer. “we are more interested in the solution that you truly believe is best, not the one you think we want to hear.” (recruiting process page)

Your cover letter: our plan

  • Why consulting: one real reason, with proof.
  • Why Kearney: one thing you found yourself, such as its practice case.
  • Two proofs: curiosity and being a doer, each with a result.
  • Keep it to one page. Do not repeat your CV.

This plan is ours. The ad sets no length or questions for the letter.

Your CV: do and don’t

Do

“Built a stock model for a student shop that cut waste by 18%”

A result with a number. Kearney’s analysts build models and run analyses.

Don’t

“Strong analytical skills and a passion for consulting”

A claim with no proof. Kearney says it does not want buzzwords.

Our CV achievement examples show how to write those lines, and our guide to writing a strong CV covers the rest. Getting ready to apply for jobs in the UK? Check your CV for free: see it the way a recruiter does, then fix each problem.

  • Other firms. See our guides to McKinsey, BCG and Bain.

05/10Stage 2 · Tests

The Kearney test

London may set a test. Kearney says you “may also be asked to complete an additional competency assessment piece”. The London ad names no test.

Kearney publishes its own Mock Recruitment Test. The mock names no office, so London may differ. Madrid, another office, says candidates “will first have to complete a test”. Your invite will say if a test applies to you, and in what format.

Kearney's published mock test: 40 questions in 60 minutes, in six sections. Quantitative logical counting, 8 questions. Quantitative statements, where you judge if the data is enough, 6 questions. Verbal logical text, 6 questions. Verbal reading a passage, 8 questions. Case studies reading a table, 6 questions. Case studies reading a graph, 6 questions. A right answer earns 5 points and a wrong one loses 1. London may differ: the London ad names no test, and your invite will say if one applies.
Kearney’s own published mock. London may differ. (click to enlarge)

40

Questions in the full mock test

60 min

For the full test, says the mock

+5 or -1

Points for a right or a wrong answer

The free mock itself is shorter: 20 questions in about 30 to 40 minutes, with an answer key. Each question has one correct answer.

Six sections, one practice question each

The six sections come from Kearney’s mock. The questions are our own examples, not Kearney’s. Try each one without a calculator.

Logical counting

“A café sells 120 coffees a day at £3. It raises the price to £3.30 and sells 10% fewer. Does revenue rise?”

What it tests: a word problem, turned into sums.

Show the working
  • Before: 120 times £3 is £360. After: 108 times £3.30 is £356.40. So revenue falls slightly.

Statements

“Does firm A make more profit than firm B? Statement 1: A’s revenue is twice B’s. Statement 2: A’s margin is 10%.”

What it tests: knowing when the data is enough.

Show the working
  • Neither statement is enough alone. Both together are still not enough, because you need B’s margin.

Logical text

“Sales rose after the shop added self-checkouts. So self-checkouts raise sales. What does this argument assume?”

What it tests: the hidden step in an argument.

Show the working
  • It assumes nothing else changed at the same time, such as a price cut or a holiday season.

Reading a passage

“A report says most of the firm’s 2025 growth came from new stores. Can you conclude that old stores shrank?”

What it tests: claiming only what the text says.

Show the working
  • No. “Most” growth from new stores leaves room for old stores to grow a little too.

Reading a table

“North has sales of £12m and costs of £9m. South has sales of £8m and costs of £5m. Which has the higher margin?”

What it tests: one extra step beyond the figures.

Show the working
  • Both make £3m profit. North’s margin is 3 out of 12, or 25%. South’s is 3 out of 8, or 37.5%. So South.

Reading a graph

“A bar chart shows sales of 50 in 2024 and 60 in 2025. The axis starts at 40, so the 2025 bar looks twice as tall. How much did sales grow?”

What it tests: reading the scale, not the shape.

Show the working
  • Sales grew by 10 on 50, which is 20%. The cut axis makes the change look bigger.

Do and skip: our advice

Do

  • Take only the test your invite names
  • Do Kearney’s mock on paper, timed
  • Practise sums and long division by hand
  • Rule out options before you guess

Skip

  • Solvers, AI helpers or anyone sitting the test for you
  • Assuming the mock is London’s exact test
  • Paying for “real” Kearney questions

This advice is ours. Kearney publishes no calculator rules. StrategyCase, a prep site, reports no calculator. In the mock, a wrong answer loses 1 point and a right one earns 5. So an informed guess pays.

06/10Stage 3 · Interviews

Kearney says the process typically has four to five behavioural and case interviews. It does not publish how many rounds London runs.

Kearney says its interviews “are conducted by consultants, so right away, you will meet the colleagues you could soon be working alongside.”

What Kearney gauges in you

Your curiosityYour capacity for generosityYour boldnessYour solidarityYour passions

Other offices, not London
  • US. Kearney’s US team describes two online rounds in its 2026 webinar. Round 1 is two 60-minute interviews, each mixing case and behavioural. Round 2 is one case and one behavioural interview, 60 minutes each.
  • Madrid. The intern ad says: a test, then 2 rounds with 4 interviews in total.
  • Stockholm. The ad says “multiple rounds of combined behavioral and case interviews”.
Kearney's case interview tips in eight steps. 1: start like a consultant entering a client's boardroom. 2: approach the case logically, with no silver bullet. 3: listen and clarify the facts and the client's goal. 4: think top down, big picture first, with no forced framework. 5: hypothesise, state assumptions and test them with questions. 6: communicate without buzzwords, be coachable but firm. 7: know your limits, and if stuck, say so and try another path. 8: think creatively from the CEO's or shareholder's view. Then build a relationship with your interviewer and be yourself.
Kearney’s own case tips, in its order. (click to enlarge)

How to answer

Case interviews

Kearney’s US team says: “We actually write our own cases here. So they’re based on real projects”. Kearney’s UK service list starts with operations, so practise operations cases too.

Your moves

  • Restate the problem and the client’s goal before you start.
  • Take a minute or two to lay out your structure. Then say it out loud.
  • Fit your structure to the case. Kearney warns against forcing a standard framework.
  • Do the maths by hand, step by step, out loud.
  • End with the answer you truly believe is best, and one risk.

The moves are ours, built on Kearney’s tips above.

Behavioural interviews

Kearney tells candidates to “use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result)”. Its US team calls the same idea SAO.

Situation

Where and when, in one line.

Task

What you had to do.

Action

What you did, not the team.

Result

Practise: one question at a time

Behavioural questions

The first two questions come from Kearney. The rest are our prompts, built on its values. The answers are our short versions.

Kearney’s US team

“Tell me about yourself. Walk me through your resume.”

What they’re testing: a clear path to Kearney, not your life story.

Show a strong answer
  • Ninety seconds: your degree, two proofs from your CV, and why consulting now.

Kearney’s tip

“Why Kearney?”

What they’re testing: real research, not a line from the website.

Show a strong answer
  • Name one thing you found yourself, such as its operations work or a talk with a consultant. Link it to what you want to learn.

Curiosity

“Tell me about a time you questioned the first answer.”

What they’re testing: whether you dig past the obvious.

Show a strong answer
  • Use STAR. Say what looked true, what you checked, and what changed as a result.

Boldness

“Tell me about a decision you made without all the facts.”

What they’re testing: whether you commit and own the result.

Show a strong answer
  • Say what you knew, the call you made and why. Then the result, and what you would change.

Case questions

The first question is Kearney’s own practice case. The rest are our prompts, built on its tips. The answers are our short versions.

Kearney’s case

“What would be your approach to increase sales lift when an item is promoted?”

What they’re testing: whether you find the cause before the fix.

Show a strong answer
  • Ask how promotions are planned, ordered and stocked. Kearney’s guidelines trace the problem to promoted items running out. Then lay out a plan to fix the ordering.

Clarify

“A client’s new product is selling less than planned. What do you ask first?”

What they’re testing: Kearney’s tip to listen and clarify before you solve.

Show a strong answer
  • Play the problem back in your own words. Then check the facts and the client’s goal.
  • Ask only what would change your plan. Then lay out your structure.

Numbers

“A warehouse ships 12,000 orders a week with 40 staff. Volume will grow 25%. How many staff will it need?”

What they’re testing: maths by hand, done carefully and out loud.

Show a strong answer
  • Each person handles 300 orders a week. New volume is 15,000, so 15,000 divided by 300 is 50. That is 10 more staff, unless output per person rises.

Recommend

“The CEO walks in. What should they do?”

What they’re testing: a clear answer you truly believe.

Show a strong answer
  • Lead with your recommendation. Give two reasons with numbers. Then one risk and a next step.
How to practise with Kearney’s case
  • The setup. A national grocery and drug store chain uses high-low pricing. Its promotions lift sales less than its rivals’ promotions.
  • The extra data. Store managers order promoted items weeks ahead, partly on gut feel. Customers complain that promoted items are missing from shelves.
  • How to use it. Answer the question out loud first. Ask for data as you would in an interview. Read Kearney’s guidelines last, on its case page.
