Short answer: without a UK family tie, the main route is the Skilled Worker visa. You need a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor paying at least £41,700 a year gross, or the job’s going rate if higher. Some Americans need no sponsor: recent graduates of listed universities (High Potential Individual visa), UK graduates (Graduate visa), and leaders in research, arts or tech (Global Talent). US citizens take no English test on the main work routes.
There are four ways to a UK work visa for US citizens: an offer from a UK employer, a move with your current US employer, your degree, or a family tie.
This guide checks the options in the order we use with clients: each route’s main rule, its cost, and which 2026 announcements are law. For the job hunt itself, see our guide on how to get a job in the UK as an American.

UK work visa for US citizens: six questions to find your route
Start with what you already have. Your first “yes” shows which route to check first.
The early questions cost less or need no employer. Each route has its full rules on GOV.UK.
- Are you, or could you be, British or Irish? Then you need no visa.
- Is your partner British, Irish or settled in the UK? A family visa may fit. “Settled” means they have permanent permission to stay, called indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
- Does your US employer have a UK office? A transfer on the Senior or Specialist Worker visa may be the quickest way in. See our guide to an intra-company transfer to the UK.
- Did you graduate from a top university in the last 5 years? Check the High Potential Individual (HPI) list. Our HPI visa guide for Americans shows how.
- Are you studying in the UK now? The Graduate visa lets you stay and work after your degree.
- Can you get a UK job offer from a licensed sponsor? That is the Skilled Worker visa, the main sponsored route.

Three routes are not open to Americans, so cross them off now:
- Youth Mobility: the UK’s working holiday visa is not open to US citizens. See the eligible list.
- A digital nomad visa: the UK has none.
- UK Ancestry on a US passport: it needs Commonwealth citizenship plus a grandparent born in the UK. A dual US and Canadian citizen may qualify.
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a work permit. It costs £20 and lets you visit and attend interviews or meetings, but not work for a UK company.
Every UK work route open to Americans, in one table
Three routes need an employer to sponsor you. The rest do not.
A sponsor is a UK employer with a Home Office sponsor licence, which means it is approved to hire people from abroad. Fees are for one adult applying from outside the UK, from the Home Office fees table of 8 October 2026, unchanged since 8 April. The Graduate visa is applied for inside the UK. Dollar figures use the ECB rate of 2 November 2026 (£1 = $1.3419).
| Route | Fits you if | Job offer? | Pay rule (gross a year) | Length | Visa fee | Leads to settlement? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skilled Worker | A licensed sponsor offers you a graduate-level job | Yes | £41,700 or the going rate, if higher | Up to 5 years, can extend | £819 (up to 3 years), £1,618 (longer) | Yes, after 5 years under today’s rules |
| Senior or Specialist Worker | Your employer moves you to its UK business | Yes, same employer | £52,500 or the going rate, if higher | Up to 5 years in any 6 (9 in any 10 at £73,900 or more) | £819 / £1,618 | No |
| Scale-up | An approved fast-growing UK firm offers you 6 months or more | Yes | £39,100 or the going rate | 2 years, then 3-year extensions | £937 | Yes, after 5 years under today’s rules |
| High Potential Individual | Your degree from a listed university is under 5 years old | No | None | 2 years (3 with a PhD), no extension | £880 | No, but you can switch |
| Graduate | You finish a UK degree on a Student visa | No | None | 2 years if you apply by 31 Dec 2026; 18 months from 1 Jan 2027; PhD 3 years | £937 | No, but you can switch |
| Global Talent | You lead, or show promise, in research, arts and culture, or digital technology | No | None | Up to 5 years | £766 in total | Yes, after 3 or 5 years, by field and how you apply |
| Innovator Founder | An endorsing body backs your new business | No | None | 3 years, can extend | £1,357, plus £1,000 endorsement and £500 per check-in | Yes, after 3 years under today’s rules |
| Family (partner) | Your partner is British, Irish or settled | No | £29,000 combined income | Up to 2 years 9 months at first | £2,064 | Yes, after 5 years as a partner |
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), £1,035 a year for NHS care, comes on top of most fees. Health and Care Worker visas are exempt. These are general rules. Check the current rules on GOV.UK or with a regulated adviser before you apply.

Skilled Worker: the main sponsored route
Your offer has to clear two bars: £41,700 a year gross, and the going rate for your job.
The Skilled Worker visa needs three things. A licensed sponsor. A job at RQF level 6 or above, which means graduate-level work. And pay at or above the higher of £41,700 (about $56,000 at ECB rates of 2 November 2026) and the going rate, the minimum the Home Office sets for each occupation code.
The going rate is often the bar that matters. In the 2026 occupation tables, software developers (code 2134) need £54,700. Management consultants and business analysts (code 2431) need £50,200. Our guide to the Skilled Worker salary threshold walks through every discount.

Some people can be paid less. If you are under 26, a recent graduate or in professional training, the new entrant rate is 70% of the going rate, with a £33,400 floor (about $44,800), for up to 4 years in total, including any Graduate visa time. Our guide to UK graduate schemes for international students shows which schemes sponsor. Some health and education jobs on national pay scales have a £25,000 floor. Nurses may be able to apply for the Health and Care Worker visa instead. Our guide for an American nurse in the UK covers that route. A Temporary Shortage List of 52 mid-level jobs applies only to certificates issued before 31 December 2026.
Three points work in your favour as an American:
- No English test. The US is on the exempt list.
- A fast decision. GOV.UK quotes 3 weeks from outside the UK. You can apply up to 3 months before you start.
- Your family can come. Your partner and children may apply as your dependants.
The employer pays for the certificate of sponsorship (CoS), the electronic record of your job that goes on your visa form. Never pay anyone for one. If an offer lands just under the bar, ask for a higher base salary, because only guaranteed basic pay counts. Our guide on how to negotiate salary shows how. To find employers, use our list of UK companies that sponsor visas.
Routes with no sponsor: HPI, Graduate and Global Talent
If your degree, your UK studies or your track record qualify you, you can job-hunt with the right to work already in hand.
High Potential Individual (HPI). This visa needs a degree from a listed university, awarded in the last 5 years. The 2026 Global Universities List, published on 1 November 2026, has 82 universities. 34 are in the US. It covers degrees awarded from 1 November 2026. Earlier graduates use the list for their award year, so Ohio State, new in 2026, counts only for new degrees. The visa lasts 2 years, or 3 with a PhD. It cannot be extended, but you can switch to Skilled Worker. It is capped at 8,000 applications a year.
Graduate visa. If you study in the UK, the Graduate visa lets you work in most jobs, for any employer, after you finish. You apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires. Apply by 31 December 2026 and you get 2 years. Apply from 1 January 2027 and you get 18 months. PhD graduates get 3 years. Our guide on how to stay in the UK after studying covers the next step.
Global Talent. This visa is for leaders and emerging leaders in research, arts and culture, or digital technology. Most applicants need an endorsement from an approved body. Winners of a listed prize can apply directly. Our guide to Global Talent visa costs sets out each fee.
In our experience, Americans who qualify for HPI often overlook it. Check the list before you start a sponsor search.
Moving with your employer, or joining a scale-up
Your current employer may be the shortest route to London. Ask HR early.
The Senior or Specialist Worker visa is for transfers within one company that holds a UK sponsor licence. Pay must be £52,500 a year gross (about $70,400) or the going rate, if higher. Under £73,900 (about $99,200), you need 12 months with the employer outside the UK first. This visa does not lead to settlement. If you plan to stay long term, ask whether the company would sponsor you on Skilled Worker instead.
The Scale-up visa is for fast-growing UK firms the Home Office has approved. You need an offer of at least 6 months at £39,100 or the going rate. After 6 months you can change employer. The Innovator Founder visa is a business plan route for founders, not a job route.
Family and passport routes: check these first
A family tie can remove the need for a sponsor, so rule it in or out early.
- British by descent. If a parent is a British citizen, you might be British already, depending on when you were born. GOV.UK’s citizenship guide sets out the rules by birth date.
- Irish citizens. With an Irish passport you can live and work in the UK without a visa, under the Common Travel Area.
- A British, Irish or settled partner. The partner visa usually needs a combined income of £29,000 a year (about $38,900). Once granted, you can work for any employer.
- A partner on a UK work visa. You join them as their dependant, not on a family visa.
Next: if none of these fit, see how other nationalities use the same routes in our guide to jobs in the UK for foreigners.
What each route costs before you land
For one adult on a 2- or 3-year visa, plan on about £3,000 to £4,000 in fees and health surcharge before you fly.
The Immigration Health Surcharge is the biggest cost: £1,035 for each year of the visa. A 3-year Skilled Worker visa comes to £3,924 (£819 plus £3,105, about $5,300 at ECB rates of 2 November 2026). A 5-year Skilled Worker visa comes to £6,793 (£1,618 plus £5,175, about $9,100). A 2-year HPI visa comes to £3,202, including a £252 Ecctis degree check (about $4,300). Both usually need £1,270 in savings, which a Skilled Worker sponsor can cover.

Your sponsor pays its own costs. For a 3-year Skilled Worker visa, a medium or large employer pays £525 for the certificate and £3,960 in Immigration Skills Charge. That is £4,485 in all (about $6,000). The employer must pay this charge itself, and its licence may be revoked if it asks you to pay.
So your CV has to show quickly why you are worth that cost. Our guide to the UK CV vs the US resume shows what to change. Our guide on why UK employers ignore American applications covers the common fixes. Getting ready to apply for jobs in the UK? US citizens still file US tax returns while living abroad, so a UK salary affects your US taxes too. This is general information only. Talk to a cross-border tax adviser before you move.
What changes in 2027, and what is only announced
Plan on the rules in force today. Treat the October and November 2026 announcements as plans, not law.
One change is already in the Immigration Rules: the Graduate visa drops to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. The Budget of 28 October 2026 announced more. None has been laid before Parliament yet:
- HPI: the list is to widen from the top 100 to the top 150 universities, with a larger cap. No date.
- Graduate: 2 years for graduates of “high-compliance” universities. No date and no list.
- Skilled Worker pay: going rates to fall from the median to the 25th percentile of pay for each job, the £41,700 general threshold to be updated on 2026 wage data, and the PhD discount removed. Planned from spring 2027.
On 2 November 2026 the Home Office announced earned settlement in a command paper (CP 1707). Settlement would take 3 years for people earning at least £125,141, 5 years for people earning more than £50,271, and 10 years by default. It has no start date, and the detailed rules are still to come. Settlement is ordinarily decided under the rules in force on the day of the decision, unless transitional rules say otherwise. So the 5-year rule of today may not be the one you settle under.

Watch GOV.UK for the detailed rules when they are laid.
Key takeaways
- Without a family tie or a listed degree, the main route is Skilled Worker, at £41,700 a year gross or the going rate, if higher.
- Check family and passport routes first: a British parent, an Irish passport or a British, Irish or settled partner can remove the need for a sponsor.
- A degree from a university on the HPI list for your award year gives you 2 years with no job offer, and the 2026 list has 34 US universities.
- Employer transfers need £52,500 or the going rate, but they do not lead to settlement.
- Plan on about £3,000 to £4,000 for one adult on a 2- or 3-year visa, in fees and the £1,035-a-year health surcharge.
- The Graduate visa falls to 18 months from 1 January 2027, while the HPI top 150 and earned settlement are announced only.

Frequently asked questions
Can a US citizen get a UK work visa without a job offer?
Yes, on some routes. The High Potential Individual visa needs a degree from a listed university in the last 5 years. The Graduate visa needs a UK degree. Global Talent needs an endorsement or a listed prize. A family visa needs a British, Irish or settled partner. Skilled Worker, Senior or Specialist Worker and Scale-up all need a job offer.
Which UK visa is easiest for an American to get?
The easiest route is the one you already qualify for. Check in this order: British or Irish citizenship, a British, Irish or settled partner, a transfer with your employer, the HPI list, the Graduate visa, then a Skilled Worker offer. Without those, the main route is Skilled Worker, and US citizens take no English test for it.
How much does a UK work visa cost for a US citizen?
For one adult on a 3-year Skilled Worker visa, the fee is £819 and the health surcharge is £3,105, so £3,924 in total, about $5,300 at ECB rates of 2 November 2026. You may also need £1,270 in savings. The employer pays the certificate of sponsorship and the Immigration Skills Charge.
Can I live in the UK and keep working for my US employer?
Not long term without a UK visa. As a visitor you may do some remote work for your US employer, but only if it is not the main purpose of your trip. There is no UK digital nomad visa, as our guide to working remotely in the UK for a US company explains. Ask your employer whether it can transfer you to a UK office instead.
Are the Budget 2026 and earned settlement changes in force?
No. The Budget of 28 October 2026 announced a wider HPI list, a 2-year Graduate visa for some universities and lower going rates from spring 2027. The earned settlement plan of 2 November 2026 has no start date. The Graduate visa falling to 18 months from 1 January 2027 is already law.
