Short answer: to move to Sweden from the US, the UK or another non-EU country, you need a residence permit from Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency. Most professionals move on a work permit, which since June 2026 needs a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month gross. Study, partner (sambo) and self-employed permits also exist. Permanent residence comes after 4 years of work, and citizenship after 8 years with a Swedish test.
Sweden is tightening. In 2026 alone it raised the pay bar for work permits, made family reunion harder, cut student work hours and moved citizenship from 5 to 8 years of residence. None of this closes the door for skilled people. It does mean the job offer now carries more of the weight, and that the order of your steps matters more than it did.
The rules below are as they stood on 5 November 2026. Migrationsverket changes its figures often, so check its current page for your permit before you sign or pay anything.

Six ways to move to Sweden, and the bar each one sets
Your passport decides whether you need a permit at all. EU and EEA citizens do not. For everyone else, Migrationsverket grants a permit for one reason at a time, and each reason has its own money test. The table puts them side by side.
| Route | Who it fits | The bar to clear | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work permit | Anyone with a Swedish job offer | SEK 34,470 a month gross (75% tier: SEK 28,725) | Permanent residence after 4 of the past 7 years |
| EU Blue Card | Graduates or 5 years’ experience, highly qualified job | SEK 53,625 a month gross | Permanent residence after 36 months |
| Permit to look for work | Master’s or PhD holders without an offer yet | SEK 13,000 of own funds per month, up to 9 months | A work permit, applied for from inside Sweden |
| Study | Admitted full-time students | SEK 10,656 of own funds per month, plus tuition | A permit to look for work, then the 75% work tier |
| Partner or sambo | Spouses and cohabiting partners over 21 | Sponsor must have SEK 13,408 a month left after tax and housing, for a couple | A permit of up to 2 years, or matching the sponsor’s |
| Self-employed | Owners of 51% or more of a business | SEK 200,000 for 2 years, plus more per family member | A permit of up to 2 years at a time |

Two common shortcuts do not apply to most readers. Sweden’s working holiday visa covers citizens of Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea aged 18 to 30 only, so Americans and Britons cannot use it (Migrationsverket, working holiday).
EU and EEA citizens: no permit, just the population register
If you hold an EU or EEA passport, you move to Sweden on your own right of residence. Swedes call this uppehållsrätt. You do not apply to Migrationsverket. If you plan to live in Sweden for one year or more, you register with Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, and receive a personal identity number (Skatteverket, EU and EEA citizens). Family members from outside the EU may need to apply to Migrationsverket for a residence card.
British citizens are now outside this route unless they lived in Sweden before Brexit and hold residence status under the Withdrawal Agreement. That status card is valid for five years, and renewing it is free (Migrationsverket, British citizens). Britons arriving now use the same permits as Americans. The United Kingdom was still among the top five nationalities granted first work permits in 2025, with 457.
Work permit: SEK 34,470 a month is now the floor
The work permit is how most American and British professionals move to Sweden. It needs a signed offer from a Swedish employer, and the employer starts the application. Migrationsverket granted about 11,000 first-time work permits in 2025 from about 16,000 applications. IT architects and developers were the largest group, at 2,182 (Migrationsverket, October 2026).
The pay bar moved on 1 June 2026. Your monthly salary must now reach at least 90% of the Swedish median salary from Statistics Sweden (SCB) on the day you apply. The median rose to SEK 38,300 on 16 June 2026, so the bar is SEK 34,470 a month gross (Migrationsverket, salary requirement). Before June, the test was a lower maintenance requirement. The pay must also match the collective agreement or normal practice for your job, which in many professions sits well above the bar.
A lower tier of 75% of the median, SEK 28,725 a month, applies to some groups:
- occupations on the government’s exemption list, such as IT support and operations technicians, systems administrators, network technicians, assistant nurses and welders
- people who hold a Swedish student or researcher permit when they apply for their first work permit
- doctors, dentists and nurses working toward Swedish certification
- staff of tech or life-science companies that are under 5 years old with fewer than 100 employees
The full list is in the Aliens Ordinance (Migrationsverket, exempted occupations). If you already hold a permit granted under the old rules and extend between 1 June and 1 December 2026, the previous maintenance test still applies to you.
The rest of the conditions are practical. Your employer must have health, life, work-injury and occupational pension insurance in place by your first day. You cannot add two jobs together to reach the bar. A permit runs for up to 2 years at a time, and never longer than your contract or your passport. If you will stay under a year, you need comprehensive health insurance (Migrationsverket, employees).
The application runs in this order:
- Your employer fills in its part in Migrationsverket’s e-service.
- You get an email link, complete your part, attach your documents and pay SEK 2,200.
- You show your passport. Most applicants do this through a digital passport check in an app. You visit the embassy or consulate-general you chose only if Migrationsverket asks you to, or if you need a visa and must give fingerprints for the permit card.
- You wait. Over the last 12 months, three in four complete applications for highly qualified jobs were decided within 1 month. For other jobs it was 4 months.
Since 1 June 2026, Migrationsverket can refuse a case because of problems linked to the employer, such as certain crimes or sanctions, and two new crimes, exploiting foreign workers and trading in work permits, came into force in 2026. Only Migrationsverket decides your permit. A company or agent cannot promise you one, and you should never pay an application fee to anyone but the Agency (Migrationsverket, avoid scams). Our guide to jobs in Sweden for foreigners covers which sectors hire from abroad and how to reach them.
The EU Blue Card is the faster lane for high earners. You need a degree of at least 180 credits or 5 years of relevant experience, a highly qualified job of at least 6 months, and a salary of at least SEK 53,625 a month gross since 15 July 2026. Since 1 June 2026 the card can run for up to 4 years, up from 2 (Migrationsverket, 1 June rules). The fee is SEK 2,000. After 36 months on a Swedish Blue Card you can apply for permanent residence (Migrationsverket, EU Blue Card). If you already hold a Blue Card from another EU country for 12 months or more, you can move and apply from inside Sweden within a month of arriving. Our overview of work visa salary thresholds in Europe compares this bar with other countries.

Study permit: 15 hours of work a week, then a year to find a job
Studying in Sweden is a slower route, but it opens the lower work permit tier. You need full-time admission to a Swedish university, proof that you have paid your tuition, and your own funds of SEK 10,656 for each month of study in 2026. The fee is SEK 1,500 (Migrationsverket, higher education).
Two 2026 changes matter here. Bachelor’s and master’s students granted a permit on or after 11 June 2026 can work at most 15 hours a week during their studies. So plan to fund yourself, not to work your way through. After you graduate, you can apply for a permit to look for work for up to 1 year, as long as you apply before your study permit runs out (Migrationsverket, after studies). When you then switch to a work permit, you only need 75% of the median salary.
Family and sambo: the sponsor’s income and housing decide it
Sweden recognises unmarried partners, but the person already in Sweden carries the test. You can join a spouse, registered partner or sambo, the Swedish word for a cohabiting partner, as long as you are both over 21. You can also apply if you plan to marry or move in together. The fee is SEK 2,000, and three in four partner cases were decided within 14 months (Migrationsverket, live with a partner).
The sponsor must earn enough to leave a set amount after housing costs. For a first application in 2026 that is SEK 8,116 a month for a single adult and SEK 13,408 for a cohabiting couple, plus between SEK 4,337 and 6,941 for each child, by age (Migrationsverket, maintenance requirement). The sponsor must also show a home with enough rooms for the family, and its costs.
From 1 October 2026, a sponsor on a temporary permit must have lived in Sweden for 2 years before family can join (Migrationsverket, 1 October 2026). Work permit holders, Blue Card holders, intra-company transferees, researchers and doctoral students are exempt. So if you move for a job, your partner and children under 21 can apply with you or afterwards. The family fee is SEK 1,500 per adult and SEK 750 per child.
Other routes: the job-seeker permit, self-employment and the US position
A master’s degree buys you up to 9 months to look for work in Sweden. The permit to look for work or start a business needs a second-cycle degree, such as a 60 or 120 credit master’s, a professional degree or a PhD. Our guide to job seeker visas in Europe compares it with other countries. You must show SEK 13,000 of your own money for each month you ask for, plus a ticket home, and comprehensive health insurance. You apply from outside Sweden, and the fee is SEK 2,200 (Migrationsverket, look for work). By our sum, nine months of funds comes to SEK 117,000. If you get an offer, apply for a work permit from inside Sweden before you start.
The self-employed permit suits people with a real business plan, not freelancers testing the market. You must own at least 51% of the business and run it, show relevant industry experience and speak Swedish or English well enough for your clients. You also need SEK 200,000 to live on for 2 years, plus SEK 100,000 for a spouse and SEK 50,000 per child. Incomplete cases took about 11 months (Migrationsverket, self-employed).
For Americans, the practical path is almost always a job offer first, then the work permit or Blue Card. Our guide on how to get a job in Europe as an American walks through the search from the US side. If you are weighing the Nordics, our guides to moving to Norway and Denmark set out their rules the same way.
Permanent residence after 4 years of work, citizenship after 8
Work and Blue Card holders can still reach permanent residence. On a work permit, you qualify once you have held and met the conditions of a permit for work and worked in Sweden for 4 of the past 7 years. You must also show that your income from a job or your own company will support you long term (Migrationsverket, extending a work permit). You apply when you extend. Family members who have lived with you for 3 years can apply at the same time. On a Swedish Blue Card the clock is 36 months (Migrationsverket, extending a Blue Card).

Sweden is phasing out permanent residence for some groups. Since 12 July 2026, it is no longer granted on protection grounds, and EU long-term resident status now brings a 5-year permit instead (Migrationsverket, 12 July 2026). The adopted bill keeps permanent residence for work permit holders after 4 of 7 years and for Blue Card holders after 3 years (Government Bill 2025/26:262). Migrationsverket’s work and Blue Card pages still describe it. Check them again when your 4 years come round, because this is the area most likely to change next.
Citizenship got much harder on 6 June 2026, with no transition period. The main rules are:
- 8 years of residence, up from 5. The spouse or sambo of a Swede needs 7 years, with the last 5 lived together.
- Income of at least three income base amounts, SEK 250,200 for 2026, or SEK 20,850 a month before tax.
- No more than 6 months of income support in the past 3 years.
- Swedish at B1 for reading and listening and A2 for speaking and writing, for applicants aged 16 to 66.
- A test on Swedish society, first held in August 2026. Language tests follow later.

What the move costs in Migration Agency fees
Fees are paid when you apply, and Migrationsverket does not refund them if you are refused. These are the fees on Migrationsverket’s pages on 5 November 2026 (work permit fees).
| Application | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Work permit | SEK 2,200 | n/a |
| Family of a work permit holder | SEK 1,500 | SEK 750 |
| EU Blue Card | SEK 2,000 | n/a |
| Permit to look for work or start a business | SEK 2,200 | n/a |
| Study permit | SEK 1,500 | SEK 750 |
| Partner or sambo | SEK 2,000 | SEK 1,000 |
| Self-employed | SEK 2,000 | n/a |
The bigger costs sit outside the fee. Students and job seekers must prove their own funds in advance. Self-employed applicants need SEK 200,000 or more. Everyone staying under a year needs private health insurance. Housing is the other large cost, and our Sweden salary guide works it through with real numbers.
First steps after you land: personnummer, ID card, BankID
Almost everything in Swedish life runs on your personnummer, so register first. If you will live in Sweden for a year or more, you must notify Skatteverket of your move (Skatteverket, moving to Sweden). Your bank, doctor, landlord and employer will all ask for the number.
- Notify your move online. Use the Flytta till Sverige e-service, which works in English. You can submit up to 14 days before you move. Each family member needs their own notification. Non-EU citizens must show a valid residence permit card.
- Book an identity check. Each person visits a state service centre with their original passport and permit card (Skatteverket, non-EU citizens).
- Wait about 6 weeks. That is how long Skatteverket said a moving-to-Sweden case took to reach an administrator (Skatteverket, processing times). Then you get your personal identity number.
- Sort your tax from day one. You can start work before you have a personnummer. Book a coordination number at a service centre and register for preliminary A-tax there. People here for a short stay can pay SINK, a flat 22.5% non-resident tax (Skatteverket, new in Sweden).
- Get a Swedish ID card. Skatteverket ID cards carry a built-in eID. From 1 December 2026, new ID cards come from the Swedish Police instead (Skatteverket, ID cards).
- Open a bank account and get BankID. BankID is a Swedish e-ID, and you order it from your bank (elegitimation.se). Ask your bank what it needs from you. Until then, Skatteverket suggests the Freja app as an eID for its Moving to Sweden e-service.

Frequently asked questions
Can an American move to Sweden without a job offer?
Only on a few routes. A master’s or PhD holder can apply for a permit to look for work for up to 9 months, with SEK 13,000 of own funds per month. You can also come as a student, a partner of someone in Sweden, or a self-employed person with SEK 200,000. The working holiday visa does not cover US citizens.
What salary do I need for a Swedish work permit in 2026?
At least SEK 34,470 a month gross, which is 90% of the median salary of SEK 38,300. Exempt occupations and former students need 75%, or SEK 28,725. The pay must also match the collective agreement for your job. The EU Blue Card needs SEK 53,625 a month.
Can my unmarried partner come with me to Sweden?
Yes. Sweden accepts a sambo, a cohabiting partner, on the same footing as a spouse, if you are both over 21. If you move on a work permit or Blue Card, your partner can apply with you and pays SEK 1,500. The 2-year wait for sponsors does not apply to you.
How long does it take to get permanent residence in Sweden?
On a work permit, you can apply once you have worked in Sweden for 4 of the past 7 years and can support yourself long term. On a Swedish EU Blue Card, it is 36 months. Sweden stopped permanent residence for some groups in July 2026, so check the current rules before you apply.
How long until I can become a Swedish citizen?
Since 6 June 2026, the main rule is 8 years of residence. You also need an income of at least SEK 20,850 a month before tax, Swedish at B1 for reading and listening, and a pass on the society test. The spouse or sambo of a Swede can apply after 7 years.
